Does SAP Business One Really Need HANA Day to Day?
What HANA actually changes in everyday SAP Business One work, which functions only exist there and what also runs with SQL Server.
In short: for documents, inventory, purchasing, sales and accounting, you do not need HANA. SAP Business One can do exactly the same on Microsoft SQL Server. HANA changes your day-to-day work in two places: reports across many documents run faster, and there is a handful of functions that SAP only offers for the HANA edition. Whether you need them decides whether the switch pays off for you.

Functions that only exist with HANA
According to the SAP documentation for version 10.0 Feature Package 2608, these functions are tied to SAP HANA:

If none of these rows makes you think “that is exactly what we are missing”, that is a clear signal: the functions alone do not justify the switch for you.
What also works without HANA
A few misconceptions persist here. The following points apply to both editions:

So the Web Client is not a reason for HANA. According to SAP, it needs at least 6 GB of memory on the server, regardless of the database.
Where you notice the speed
HANA keeps the data in memory in a column-based format. That helps whenever a report aggregates many documents, and hardly at all when you enter a single document.

Blanket factors such as “ten times faster” do not help you much with the decision, because they depend heavily on the database, the query and the hardware. What holds up is a comparison with your own reports. The test migration delivers exactly that, while your production system keeps running unchanged.
Three everyday situations
Sales: Your sales back office is looking for a transaction and only knows part of the customer name and the approximate date. On SQL Server, they go through the search windows for the order, delivery and invoice. With Enterprise Search, they type the term once and see all matching documents and master data.
Management: You want to see revenue, incoming orders and open items every morning. On SQL Server, someone builds that as a query or an Excel report. On HANA, you set up a dashboard in the cockpit that is up to date as soon as you open it.
Purchasing: Your materials planners plan orders based on gut feeling and last year’s figures in Excel. With Intelligent Forecast, SAP Business One suggests forecasts from your own sales history, which feed into MRP.
If you recognise yourself in two of these three situations and your reports take minutes rather than seconds today, it is worth taking a closer look at the fixed-price HANA migration. If not, a well-maintained system on SQL Server 2022 is the more economical choice.
